What is McTimoney Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health care profession that specialised in the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of skeletal conditions that occur as a result of mechanical dysfunction of the joints and muscles within the body.
In the UK all chiropractors undergo a minimum of four years training, which must be updated yearly, and are registered and regulated by the General Chiropractic Council.

The McTimoney Chiropractic Technique was developed over 50 years ago by the late John McTimoney.  It is a gentle and effective whole-body treatment, (the bones are never forced) which uses precise, low force adjustments to help realign and rebalance the body, helping to increase mobility, relieving pain and discomfort, and allowing the nervous system to work more efficiently.

When to use?

Many conditions benefit from chiropractic treatment including:
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Muscular aches
  • Pain, discomfort and stiffness in joints
  • Migraines
  • Sport injuries
  • Arthritic pain

Because of its gentle nature McTimoney Chiropractic is suitable for people of all ages from babies to the elderly.

Your first appointment

The first appointment lasts between 1 and 1½ hours. At the start of the consultation a detailed history of your complaint, as well as a full medical history, will be taken.
Following this, a physical examination which includes appropriate neurological and orthopaedic test will be carried out on the area of your body which is causing you discomfort.  In order to assess you properly, you may be asked to undress to your underwear; a gown is available if required.
Once the examination is complete, providing a referral to another healthcare professional (GP) is not more appropriate, individual bones and joints of the skull, thorax, spine, pelvis and limbs will be adjusted as needed.

The number of treatments usually varies between 2 and 6 sessions for straightforward problems. However, the number and frequency of treatments depends on a person’s general health and the length of time they have suffered from a problem.
